This year in dance was definitely a work in progress. I had no idea how to do anything and if somebody would’ve told me to do a tondu or a releve back then I would’ve had no idea what to do or what they were talking about. I decided to do dance because as a junior we no longer have pe and joining dance was originally just for keeping me in shape. Then as the days went by I began to love dance itself and was always excited to learn new choreography. My favorite part of dance was learning different styles of dance and doing workouts because it was fun and beneficial at the same time. Also In high school a lot of classes are just spent sitting down listening to a teacher lecture as we either take notes or work on a worksheet and dance was the one class I had where it almost felt like a breath a fresh air and could move. The cool thing about dance is once you get the choreography down you can add your own style to it and it’s the coolest thing to watch. I am so glad I chose to do dance this year and it’s one of the best dances I’ve ever made.

Dancer/ Choreographer Lester Horton created a dance technique influenced by Native American dances. , Horton uses flat backs and lateral stretches, tilt lines and lunges, all movements that could be found in a jazz warm-up. As watching the video is seems more like stretching and good posture. Their backs are always straight and long. It’s incorporated in a lot of jazz.
Lester Horton was born in indianapolis, Indiana and died in Los Angeles, California. His initial interest in movement began when he saw performances by modern dancers and were also influenced by Native American Culture. He began to study ballet at a studio in indianapolis. Later he attended Denishawn School of Dance. Then he moved to Chicago to study with a Russian American Ballet dancer and choreographer. Then he studied in Los Angeles with a japanese dancer and choreographer. Basically he learned many different things from each one of these choreographers which influenced what he created. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-6InwN_gVU In this video I can see how elegant it is and the posture is incredible. Their backs are very tall and their posture seems to be key in this technique. They seem to use lines and a lot of hand swaying or swinging. There’s a lot of pausing poses and people doing other movements in the background. To start of, modern dance began as a rebellious ballet dance, basically like ballet but going against all the rules. On top of that modern dance also hated ballet shoes and ballet clothes. This dance incorporates multiple styles and it evolved with each generation incorporating improvisation and expressionist movement. Modern dance is used to tell a story and specifically focused on raising consciousness on social movements. This form f dance is to portray an image bringing awareness.
Post Modern on the other hand does not tell a story it's a simply just a performance dance. The most strange thing about post modern is that they do not really utilize actual music but they do use sounds/ noises. It also includes more gestures and abstract movements Contemporary is like all dances in one. Its a collaborative that includes modern, jazz, ballet and hip hop elements. This form of dance brings back the foundations of ballet and infused with jazz. Contemporary dance tends to combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well. The name of the company is called Axis dance company: changing the face of dance and disability by using advocacy, engagement and artistry. Their mission is to unify the people with and without physical disabilities. Axis dance was first founded in the year 1987 and they’ve performed at about 100 cities in the USA, Europe and Russia. They came to my school to perform and that was the very first time I had ever seen them or heard of them. Axis dance does integrated forms of dances. If I had to describe their quality of performance I would say it was tragic because it seems to be very emotionally intense and expressive. I really like the ways they integrated the disabled because they were able to incorporate them into really complicated movement and they did very mesmerizing tricks on their wheelchairs. I was at awe with every performance because they were all very amazing and capturing. After seeing this performance it was very uplifting because this just shows that anything is possible it you put your mind to it. It definitely changed my perception of who can dance because anyone is capable of doing it if they put their minds to it. As one of the guys in the wheelchair said, it wasn’t easy and it does take a lot of hard and dedication but it’s not impossible.
Tom is talking about how dancers should never talk and about the process about what they do to make this work. A performance is based on experienced and adding the evolution. You have to feel every movement. He expresses different poems and what it is to integrate yourself to the dance, the movement and your thoughts in order to fulfill each dance move to its full potential. This ted talk with Tom was more energetic and the man speaking was more physical and expressive. He took two people so that they would interpret his moves and the things he said. He used the letters T E and D to make movements and the other dancers would grasp the information so they would receive and then interpret. He translated word ted into something physical by using the space those letters provide. Then he used beats and told them to do body to body transfer, provocation and task based methods (mental dance). The difference between the two is one was more calm and showing dance through poetry whereas Wayne was more physical and showing everything through dance moves. They show different perspectives of dance
In my dance class a couple of members from the Kaiser Permanente hospital came to our dance class to teach us a couple things about injuries in dance and how to prevent them. We were split into groups and within those groups everyone did a couple of exercises. In these exercises they would be able to tell whether we were a bit to tight in some areas and I was told that my thigh muscles were very tight and that I should be stretching to prevent injury. It was just my luck that I had worked out the day before so I was a tad sore and now I know I should've stretched after. I found out that day that I am actually hyperflexible because I was able to do 4 out of the 5 exercises
The purpose within these exercise were to see where you needed to work on and stretch because with these results the nurses were able to tell us where we needed to stretch more and what we needed to do to prevent those injuries from happening based on what exercise you were not able to do. https://www.stopsportsinjuries.org/STOP/STOP/Prevent_Injuries/Dance_Injury_Prevention.aspx As said in this website when dancing you need to make sure you're technique is right because if you are doing them wrong it can be dangerous. Reading this reminded me of what the nurses said because when we were stretching they also payed close attention as to if we were doing it right because that is crucial, not only can you get hurt but also you're not stretching the right areas. When I was stretching wrong the lady came up to me to adjust me, before I could't feel anything and once she came to adjust me I could instantly feel the difference. It is also important to warm up before and stretch after! |
